2014 Spotswood Award
Spotsylvania County resident Dorothy T. Garland has been chosen as the 2014 recipients of the County’s annual Governor Spotswood Awards. A selection committee of Spotsylvania residents chose those to be honored after reviewing all of the nominations submitted by the public.
Dorothy T. Garland a resident of Spotsylvania County for 56 years. Her generosity to the community started when her children were young. Dorothy was a stay at home mom and her house was known as the “Kool Aid House”. All the neighborhood children would gravitate to her home and they loved all the attention that she would give each of the children.
Dorothy has been a supporter of the students at The Walker Grant School. When she was younger her and her husband would ask for wish lists from the students and school teachers. Even with limited resources they would still purchase everything on the lists to help support their education. Because of Dorothy and her late husband’s efforts with the school the local Rod Club dedicates a car show each year in their names with proceeds going to the Walker Grant School.
Currently she has been running several senior citizen bingo events at local restaurants. For 8 years she has served as the Chaplin for the American legion Ladies Group as well as the treasurer for the Spotsylvania Senior Citizens and is a member of many other groups. Dorothy continues to make sure the senior bingo events take place even if she is unable to attend due to health issues. Keeping senior citizens active in the community is her main goal for these events.
